I thoroughly enjoyed reading this debut crime novel, not least because it's written by someone who started out their career like me - as a self-published author.

The author here has a great protagonist in Inspector McLean but also provides a superb supporting cast. Descriptions of places and crime scenes strike a perfect balance between showing, then letting the reader's imagination take over.

The acclaim for James Oswald's writing is justly deserved and I look forward to reading the next Inspector Mclean novel soon.
